Eastbourne Shopmobility has received three new mobility scooters, worth £4,500, thanks to The Co-op Local Community Fund.
Customers of local Co-op stores in Cornfield Road, Albert Parade, Framfield Way, Meads, Shinewater and three Co-op Funeralcare stores have all helped raise the money by taking part in the company’s new Membership scheme launched last year.
In addition to giving customers a reward when they buy own-branded products and services, the scheme also gives a further 1% to benefit local causes. In its first six months, an amazing £9 million has been donated to more than 4,000 community groups and good causes in the UK.
The scooters, supplied by the Weald Mobility Care Centre, were presented to the charity by Tony Hatfield, Area Manager for the Co-op, Patti Coomber, Co-op Community Lead, and Mark Downey, Co-op store manager.
The donation takes the number of manual and electric scooters available for hire to 24 in total. Every year, the scooters are hired around 5,000 times by residents and visitors to the town.
Fred Connell, Co-ordinator at Eastbourne Shopmobility, said: “We’re very grateful to The Co-op Local Community Fund. Any donation is fantastic but to receive three brand new scooters was more than we had hoped. Our service is very well used so it means equipment does need to be replaced and these donations mean we can continue to offer a great service to our customers.”
Tony Hatfield said: “As a community retailer we are committed to making a difference in our local communities. It is our aim to establish our stores as a local hub and a centre for the community and we want members of our scheme to know that every time they swipe their Membership card they are raising much needed funding for organisation in their community who contribute to improving local life.”
Eastbourne Shopmobility, which is located outside the rear entrance of the Eastbourne Arndale Centre by Marks & Spencer, opens Monday to Saturday from 9am until 4.30pm. It is closed for lunch between 12.30pm and 1pm. The service does not open on Sundays or bank holidays.
