Week 5 of Win A Car at the Eastbourne Arndale Centre 673

A shopping centre preparing for a major new extension has won an international environmental award for its innovative approach to sustainable transport.

Construction work on the £85 million shopping quarter at the Eastbourne Arndale Centre is due to start early in the New Year.

It will create 25 new shops, seven new restaurants, a 9-screen multiplex cinema and 800 new jobs.

The additional challenge has been planning for and dealing with the transport needs of the vastly increased workforce. Car parking can sometimes be a squeeze around the town centre, especially on peak shopping dates such as Christmas and the New Year.

The shopping centre management team, led by Centre Manager Bill Plumridge and Operations Manager Mark Powell, came up with an initiative that has been praised by a panel of judges.

They have been awarded the highly prestigious Green Apple Award by the international environmental body, The Green Organisation.

Under the three-strand approach, shop workers and Centre support staff are being offered a variety of incentives to leave the car at home and opt for public transport, bikes, electric cars and lift-shares.

Centre Manager Bill Plumridge said he was absolutely delighted to win the Green Apple Award. He said: “This is an international award that recognises environmental best practice.

“We knew our entry was strong, but it was still a fantastic surprise to be told that we had won,” he added.

The awards ceremony took place at the Houses of Parliament in London and the trophy and certificate now have pride of place in Bill’s office.
