Eastbourne Arndale Centre’s £85 million extension was one of 130 sites that opened its doors to the public for a unique chance to see behind the scenes of live construction.
The Open Doors event saw over 3,000 bookings across sites in England, Scotland and Wales giving the opportunity to see how buildings are constructed and the diverse range of skills and professions needed on site.
Kier, which is carrying out the Arndale Centre extension construction for Legal & General Property, held five sessions and showed 24 people round the site including students from Sussex Downs College and individuals from JobCentre Plus.
Kier Senior Project Manager Kevin Watts (pictured) and Site Manager Michael Whittle gave a tour of the site and a presentation to explain what the project entailed.
Kevin said: “The Open Doors initiative is a great way of giving the public access to behind the scenes of major construction sites and giving them an insight into the industry. We showed round a variety of people, some of whom were interested in a career in the industry and others who were just keen to find out as much as possible about a local project that is going to have such an enormous positive impact on their town.”
Open Doors is an annual initiative with the next event planned for 2018.
